“Trauma” as Loss of Connection, “Yoga” as Reconnecting— a practice of self-inquiry and self-care.
What is Somatic Yoga Therapy (SYT)?
SYT is a trauma and polyvagal-informed led practice that is accessible, repetitive and gentle. An intersection of somatics, yoga, neuroscience, and applied psychophysiology. It’s approach is one of wisdom of the soma. We are not instructed to strive or challenge ourselves in shapes, rather we are guided to attune to what we are feeling in simple shapes. Through easily embodied combinations of yoga postures and somatic practices we begin the process of re-patterning and integration, one in which we arrive to a quality of movement where the mind becomes calm and aware with what is going on in the body. Through deep listening and sustained attention, we begin to re-discover the language of the body, developing an invaluable sense of trust and a more compassionate, kind and pleasurable relationship with.
In practice we explore listening, responsiveness and experience autonomy with static movement that grows into bigger moving fluid expressions. The movement is slow, exploratory, and uncomplicated and yet reveal to the surface our deepest truths in a playful, light-hearted and empowering way.
We practice breath as a powerful entry point to deeper embodiment. Our breath reveals our internal landscape and our unique relationship with life. Within that breath we can experience resistance, holding patterns, anxiety, grasping and unease, and with conscious breathing techniques we create space to learn how to breath again.
We approach mindfulness as a means to becoming more intimate with what is actually happening from moment to moment. Through meditation and body scans we learn to invite relaxation. We soften in our resistance and tight held pattens to cultivate capacity to re-experience the pleasures of life through our felt sense by deeply settling and nurturing our body in flow.
Witnessing Self
Imagine your mat as a feel-good rectangle, immersed in sunshine. A safer space where challenges are faced, obstacles are overcome, fears are realized, and self-love is initiated. An intimate encounter to learn, witness and grow.
Are you ready to better understand yourself through movement? To bring awareness through practice? Are you ready to remember that you are already whole?

“Everything DJ teaches comes from her own experience in her body, with a constant emphasis on our shared humanity. Her teaching is honest, always evolving, and it makes me feel safe to make the unfamiliar familiar kinda thing as she says.”

“I always look forward to Wednesdays. It has been a special day for me since. To be honest, I can see the reflection of her teaching in how I act and respond to everything that is happening around me. I’m truly grateful for her and the experience she has taken me through.”
